News

Welcome to the Spoons App News/Blog/Articles.

While spending many hours ‘researching’ (some might say obsessing) over Wetherspoons, I find a significant amount of interesting information that has up until now sat unloved in my Apple notes. Well as I enter into the second year of Spoons Apps, I’ve decided to try a News/Blog/Article section to pass on that useless knowledge!

🪣 It’s Coming home…. The Bucket Hat

16 July 2026

alt Spoons Bucket Hats

Well after my third attempt at securing a mighty Wetherspoon bucket hat, I finally managed it. And as with everything in life it’s worth having a spare incase a family member takes a shine to your new hat!

I counted 19 bucket hats behind the bar, so my calculations of 25 per Spoons might not be far off the mark.

Needless to say I am currently sporting said hat, whilst I summon up the enthusiasm to add in the final limited edition badge for the 3rd place match Saturday. Not the actual award I wanted to be adding….

Now the real question is….. which looks best on the hat ? Plate side in, or plate side out ??

📊 Some stats about the Spoons App

15 July 2026

Whilst releasing yesterday’s update with the new LIMITED EDITION England semi-final badge, I decided to ‘compile’ a few statistics to while away the hours minutes…..

The Spoons app figures
  • 835 Wetherspoons in total in the app.
  • 810 Wetherspoons are currently open.
  • 12 Wetherspoons are permanently closed.
  • 5 are temporarily closed.
  • 12 Wetherspoons are at airports. (3 are not yet open)
  • 5 Wetherspoons are at train stations.
  • 9 Haven Holiday Wetherspoons.
  • 56 Wetherspoon Hotels.
And finally, 49 Wetherspoon names start with ‘The’.

🛫 Airports are like busses…. Wetherspoons Airport openings

9 July 2026

Well I’ve been beavering away again, working on version 1.1.3 of Spoons, which has a flurry of updates. Obviously there is another limited edition badge to celebrate Englands Quarter Final match against Norway on Saturday.
But there are also quite a few new Wetherspoons heading our way. As the title suggests (sorry for the poor pun) these include 3 new airport Wetherspoons.

Now it only seems reasonable to stretch the metaphor even further by listing the changes as follows:

The Arrivals
  • The Sir Ronald Wates, University of Surrey (delayed opening 14/07/2026) 🎓
  • The Sir Frank Whittle, Heathrow Airport (21/07/2026) ✈️
  • The Red Gown, University of St Andrews (04/09/2026) 🎓
  • The Belle Vue, Manchester Airport (08/09/2026) ✈️
  • The Piccadilly Hall, London (13/10/2026)
  • The Benjamin Franklin, London (24/11/2026)
  • Sant Jordi, Barcelona Airport (26/11/2026) ✈️
  • The William Chambers, Edinburgh (03/11/2026)
The Departures
  • The Grey Friar, Preston (closed 28/06/2026)
That takes the tally of Wetherspoons in my app to 835.

⚽️ It’s Monday 1am… no It’s Sunday 7pm…

4 July 2026

A little insight into life as an Indie dev…

Well that was an interesting version release, I submitted version 1.1.2 well ahead of time to ensure it was out before the scheduled England match (Monday 1 AM Start time), and by the time it had actually been approved, news was out that they had changed the time and day of the match to Sunday 7pm. (or so I thought!)

It happened so late at night, there was no way I was going to start work on a new version, and decided it was tomorrows issue.

Cue an early Saturday morning wake up, with the expectation of having to get version 1.1.3 done, submitted, and hopefully released in one day.

Whilst pondering the best way forward over my early morning coffee, I checked the news, only to discover it was back to a 1AM Start!!!

Anyway version 1.1.2 has been released, and includes another NEW LIMITED EDITION badge, to celebrate the England Vs Mexico Round of 16 Match. As per the other awards, visit any Spoons on the day of the England match and you will win the England Vs Mexico award.

There are actually only 5 Spoons opening for the match itself, so enjoy if you are close to one of the following:

  • The Bishops Mill, Durham,
  • The Cooper Rose, Sunderland,
  • The William Rufus, Carlisle,
  • Penderel’s Oak, Holborn
  • The Solomon Culter, Birmingham
Please check that the Wetherspoons is actually open before making firm plans!

As of today (3rd July) this is literally the only link / information I can find mentioning Spoons that are opening for the match. The Caterer

In Other news… on my hunt for the Bucket Hat…. I am still empty handed headed.

😢 Looks like we will be Losing a Spoons this month

3 July 2026

Sad news, it appears we will be waving farewell to The Ernehale, Arnold, Nottingham on the 19th July.

It has been a Wetherspoons for over 26 Years! In a previous life it was a Co-op (built in 1904).

As always, with my app I guarantee :

  • You will not lose any of the visits you logged for this pub,
  • if you forgot to log a previous visit to The Ernehale, you will still be able to log it
  • I never delete a Spoons that has closed.
So if you want to collect this one you better get your 🛼 on!

The Ernehale (This will be a broken link at some point)

🧢 Hats off to Sir Tim

2 July 2026

More news for July, I know we have a quiet month then the world of Spoons explodes!

Not sure how I missed this, but Wetherspoons have released a limited edition bucket hat to raise money for children and young people with cancer. Which I think is a fantastic idea.

I already have my compulsory TOP TRUMPS cards from last year, and will be avidly hunting out one of the hats on my next Spoons visit.
There’s only 20,000 of these beauties available (well 19,999 to be precise as I want one myself!), so my advice is to yours quick!

UPDATE: 3rd July It seems to be proving tricky locating the elusive hats, some Spoons have them listed on the menu, some don’t and even those that have don’t seem to have any in stock. Sadly I wasn’t able to find one today, when visiting a Wetherspoons, so the hunt continues for me!. Good luck finding yours.

🆕 It’s all of the ones… Version 1.1.1 released

30 June 2026

To celebrate England making it to the Round of 32 🎉, I have added another limited edition badge to the awards.
Log a visit to ANY Wetherspoons during the match day (1st July 2026 incase you were wondering), and you will unlock a lovely new Badge.

Not wanting to jinx anything 🤞, but more badges maybe will be added as England progresses through the Tournament.

Now to workout where on earth the whole of June went!!

⛔️ There are currently 4 Wetherspoons temporarily closed.

24 June 2026

  • The George, Croydon, England (re-opens Tuesday 21st July 2026) website
  • The Humphrey Bean, Kent, England (re-opens Tuesday 7th July 2026) website
  • The Samuel Peto, Folkestone (re-opens Friday 17th July 2026) Website
  • The John Logie Baird, Hastings (re-opens Friday 17th July 2026)Website
More details on the temporary closure of The Samuel Peto, Folkestone, Kent….

According to the news its having an extensive refurbishment, costing upwards of £550,000. It will also include apparently a NEW CARPET. So one to look out for!.

By my calculations £550,000 equates to 82,212 Large breakfasts! (now if only I could calculate how many football pitches that would cover.)

Kent Wetherspoons revamp

⚽️ You can never have too many badges

16 June 2026

It’s new version time, and this one I am sure is going to unleash a whole new audience for the Spoons app! (Yes every single time I add a new feature I am convinced this will take it to the next level.)

In celebration of the current Football World Cup, I have added 6 new LIMITED edition awards. I know, I’m going award crazy. You will win a different badge for visiting any Spoons during England or Scotland matches.
When both teams get through to the next round (positive thoughts everybody), I will obviously be adding more badges as the dates are announced.

What about the Spoons fans that are avoiding the tournament?
Don’t worry, I haven’t gone crazy, you can turn the feature off from within the app settings.

alt Football Awards Settings

If you love the new feature, or even if you are ambivalent to it, then how about leaving a star rating or even a review on the App Store ?

😢 Another Spoons bites the dust..

10 June 2026

Sadly it looks like June will have its first casualty, when The Grey Friar, Preston closes as a Wetherspoons.

The good news is that the new owners will still operate it as a pub (hurrah). Apparently it has been a Spoons since the 1990’s - contact me if you visited it back in the 90’s. The truly shocking news, is that the 90’s is over 30 years ago!

The Final date appears to be 28th June 2026, so if you are looking to tick this one off you do have a little pre-warning. Don’t forget, even once this is no longer a Wetherspoons, you will still be able to log your visit as I keep even the closed Spoons in the App.

So long The Grey Friar…. 🍺

💤 List of Spoons Temporarily Closed

8 June 2026

Even though I release updates at least once a month, there are always one or two Spoons that temporarily close between releases.

It’s always advised to check the Spoons you are hoping to visit, before travelling across the continent, because they can often close unexpectedly.

For example there are currently 5 Spoons that are temporarily closed:

  • The Railway Bell, Barnet, England (re-opens Tuesday 9th June 2026) website
  • The Black Boy, Newtown, Powys, Wales (re-opens Wednesday 10th June 2026) website
  • The Standing Order, Hampshire, England (re-opens Monday 15th June 2026) website
  • The George, Croydon, England (re-opens Tuesday 21st July 2026) website
  • The Humphrey Bean, Kent, England (re-opens Tuesday 7th July 2026) website
UPDATE: Thanks to a follower on twi…. I mean X (thanks Rob M). Although this one is showing as currently open, looking at news websites its actually temporarily closed for a £550K refurbishment.

  • The Samuel Peto, Folkestone, England (re-opens either late June or July 16th 2026) website

🎂 Happy Birthday To Spoons (App) ?

16 April 2026

Happy Birthday to me… well not actually me, more the Spoons App. It is exactly one year ago today since I released the first version of Spoons. It actually took around 6 months from starting developemnt, to releasing version 1.0.0. Needless to say its not my first app, the first app I released on the App store was way back in 2010.

Obviously I planned to spend half that time developing it, but once I had nailed down the basic features Mrs Spoons kept suggesting new ideas, which once I had heard, just had to be in added.

Since last April there have been a whopping 19 versions released. The app has become a definite passion project, and I’ve enjoyed having an excuse totally valid reason to get out and visit lots of Wetherspoons.
